Itching died on February 14, 1982.Title, Ex YU rock enciklopedija: Author, Petar Janjatović. In the autumn of 1981 he received the Venroadse Erepries, which was awarded to him by the Venrayse Volkscultuur "Het Veldeke" Association for his contribution to portraying Limburg history. In 1981, Jeuken was diagnosed with cancer. The Limburgs Museum in Venlo purchased a number of paintings and the Venrays Museum also owns a number of canvases. In the following years, he exhibited a lot at home and abroad. In 1974, Rank Xerox devoted almost the entire Christmas issue of the company magazine to Jeuken's work. Dolf Welling wrote in the Haagsche Courant: "Johan Jeuken is one of the most versatile and gifted naives who are hunted by some collectors." In 1972 he exhibited at Museum Fodor and in 1973 his work was shown in the Brabants Museum. Jeuken gained national fame through an exhibition in 1971 in the Amsterdam Galerie Asselijn. In 1970, the City of Amsterdam purchased his work and the Stedelijk Museum included the painting The Fire of the Paterskerk in its collection. In 1969 work was shown at the Talens exhibition. The journalist Carel Swinkels, who may be called his promoter as a painter, described his style as 'anecdotal'. These are buildings that are now protected as national monuments such as the Grote Kerk and the former Town Hall on the Grote Markt, but also for monumental buildings that are no longer there." With this, Jeuken has depicted many buildings and streets in Venray from his youth in an interesting way. "Almost all scenes are painted within a framework of surrounding buildings. Trips from primary school, the cattle market, the mobilization and the bombing of Venray are also painted with endless patience and precision.įollowing an exhibition in the Venrays Museum, Frans de Roos of the Venray Monumental Foundation writes: They depict specific events such as the funfair, processions, the archers' guild and sports demonstrations. Almost all of his paintings relate to the Venray of his youth. Jeuken enrolled in a course at the Rietveld Academy and expanded his knowledge of drawing and painting there.įrom 1967 he painted almost exclusively with oil paint. His sons, both graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, were so enthusiastic about the result that they urged him to continue drawing. After a long recovery period, he made a drawing at the request of his wife. In 1964 he had a massive heart attack and had to stop working entirely on doctor's advice. In 1956 he joined a clothing factory as a designer and manager. In 1947, Jeuken moved from Venray with his family to Amsterdam, where he continued his tailoring business. His profession was a tailor: he learned the trade from his father and established himself in 1933 as an independent ladies' and men's tailor. Johan Jeuken (Venray, 1909 - Amsterdam, 14 February 1982) made naive paintings he himself called himself a pleasure painter.
